Tinder Introduces a Brand New Feature
Updated: Aug 22, 2022
The ‘Tinder Swindler’ is a super eye opening Netflix documentary film that recently took the world by storm. It followed the experiences of numerous women who became victims of an intensely shocking online dating swindle. They were fooled into giving away millions of their own hard-earned money as a result of trusting someone who they had met via the online dating platform of Tinder. Although the online dating world has recently grown in popularity due to the pandemic and increased levels of loneliness, it has also led to a not-so-fab increase in the act of swindling. Criminals are hovering around dating platforms like no tomorrow and taking huge advantage of vulnerable men and women who are looking for love. However, this is hopefully all about to change.
The leading dating application, Tinder, has just announced the release of a brand new feature that aims to reduce the probability of such crimes from taking place. This is groundbreaking news in the online dating space as it has been vulnerable to catfishing, fraud, swindling (etc) since it first even became a thing.
It is safe to say that the dangers attached to online dating has had everyone talking in recent times. So much so, that it has caused the leaders of the industry to take action in righting the wrongs that are so commonly linked to their offering. Tinder has teamed up with a startup company called ‘Garbo’ to offer a swipe feature that allows you to do a background check on a person before engaging in any further interactions with them. This promotes safety and empowers users to make better and more informed decisions, while giving criminals much less of a chance to successfully go about falsifying their story.
Along with this announcement that came earlier in the week, Tinder also shared more specific details about the brand new feature. Thanks to its partnership with ‘Garbo’, users will be able to learn about criminal records linked to a person by typing in simple details such as their first name and phone number. Garbo then works its magic by scanning public records for any arrests or convictions. People who do prove to have a ‘dodgy’ criminal record, can then be reported to Tinder themselves for further investigation. The app has stated that they don’t want people with a harmful history to be roaming around on their platform and would therefore act by banning or removing them altogether.
This feature is just such a great introduction to the Tinder world. However, one will have to pay a small fee to access this offering and indeed possess greater peace-of-mind. Each user will be given 2 free background checks to make use of, after which a minimum of $2.50 (R40) per search (excluding processing fees), will be charged. The online dating world can defs be full of fun and excitement, but it’s gotta be said that safety always comes first, even if it means splashing some extra cash to secure the goods.
