A Cape Town Guide To Padel

There’s a new sport in town which is totally winning over the hearts of the people! It’s called Padel, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. The game of Padel was invented many many years ago at a resort in Mexico. Although it’s a game that’s been around for a long time, it has recently spread like crazy to all corners of the globe.

Let’s break down exactly what this Padel sport is all about. Well, an easy way to explain it is that it's a mix between tennis and squash. It’s played with four people (two per side) on an enclosed court that’s a tad smaller than a tennis court. It’s a fast paced racket sport that also follows the same scoring system as tennis. Perhaps it doesn’t sound like anything special…BUT, wait for it…the amazing thing about this game is that it can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. No matter your age or level of sporting ability, you are certain to have an absolute ball (pun intended). The simplicity and ease of playing Padel is defs one of the main reasons why it's picked up so fast!

The first Cape Town Padel courts popped up in Century City a few years ago and can be found right next to the Fives Futbol grounds. However, since then, the sport has spread crazy amounts and can be enjoyed at many different venues across the city, including: the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, Claremont, Table View, Durbanville and the coolest indoor space in Paarden Eiland.

So how do you take part in the action? Before visiting a venue, it’s super important to book a slot using the ‘Playtomic’ mobile application. On the platform, you can view all the different venues around Cape Town as well as their prices and availability. Once you've selected a venue, proceed by booking a time slot that suits you and there you have it!

Cost wise, you can expect to pay between R240 - R600 for a one hour session - splitting this fee between four people makes it totally affordable. Bear in mind that Padel rackets can be rented from the venue on the day at a small additional fee.

Get your body moving, laugh to the max, socialize with your mates all while developing a new skill, it’s no wonder this sport has got everyone singing its praises! Head to a Padel court near you and see what the hype is all about.
